The Greek influence is still alive and well along Sicily's east Coast (from Messina down to Siracusa). Here, in Taormina, the Greeks built a magnificent mountaintop theatre with spectacular views of the sea and Etna. A few Punic Wars later, and the Romans arrived. Their improvements? Expanding the theatre for blood sports and other entertainment of the flesh, a tradition that is proudly reflected in Italian TV today.
