Matera is truly an incredible place -- and not just because Mel Gibson says so. 15 movies (including a New Line flick this Xmas called "The Nativity") were shot here in this ancient, ancient city that for decades was abandoned. Walking through the streets is like stepping back 2,000 years. Much of the old city is still unpopulated, the perfect set for biblical-themed movies. Oh, and the restaurants are fantastic!
